During a point-of-sale transaction, the POS system transmits a request related to the pre-paid calling card via the communication network to the processing system. The processing system coupled to the service data point performs a transaction in accordance with the transaction request and transmits a status response message back to the point-of-sale system indicating whether the transaction was performed in accordance with the transaction request.
