A communications system and method for allowing passengers of mobile platforms to access virtual private networks is disclosed. The system includes a network on the mobile platform that communicates with a ground station via a satellite. The ground station is connected to a virtual private network (VPN). The system further includes user communication devices (UCDs) connected to the network and a first address manager connected to the network that assigns public internet protocol (IP) addresses when the UCDs request a connection to the VPN and that assigns private IP addresses for at least one other network service.
