A method is proposed for adjusting for frequency and phase variations between a signal containing incoming and outgoing data and data gaps, where the phase difference between signal frames of input and output signals is measured by a phase meter, where the signal processing unit uses the phase position of the signal frames to calculate the difference between incoming and outgoing bytes, and the signal processing unit uses the difference in bytes to decide, by means of a predetermined response curve, whether stuffing data should be inserted or removed.
