A grafted polyolefin containing one or more of N-vinylimidazole, 4- vinylpyridine, or other ethylenically-unsaturated nitrogen-containing or oxygen-containing graftable monomers grafted to a polyolefin backbone is disclosed. The grafted polyolefin preferably has a weight average molecular weight of from about 20.000 to about 500.000, a polydispersity of less than about 10, and an ADT value of at least about 8. The grafted polyolefin can be defined as containing more than about 1.2 % by weight of grafted monomer on a polyolefin, or as containing at least about 13 moles of graftable monomers per mole of polyolefin, or as having an asphaltene dispersancy test (ADT) value of at least about 8. Also described is a lubricating oil comprising a lubricant base oil and a grafted polyolefin as described above. Also described is a method of making a dispersant viscosity index improver. N-vinyl-imidazole or other ethylenically unsaturated nitrogen-containing and/or oxygen-containing graftable monomers and a graftable polyolefin are reacted with enough of an initiator to graft the monomer to the polyolefin. The initiator and/or graftable monomer is added to the other ingredients, maintained at the reaction temperature, over a period of time. The reaction temperature is maintained at a level high enough to give acceptable reaction times. The N- vinylimidazole and the initiator each can be added at a uniform, relatively slow rate during the reaction.
L'invention se rapporte à une polyoléfine greffée contenant au moins un N-vinylimidazole, 4-vinylpirydine ou autres monomères greffables contenant de l'azote éthyléniquement insaturé ou de l'oxygène greffés à un squelette de polyoléfine. La polyoléine greffée a de préférence un poids moléculaire moyen en poids compris entre environ 20.000 et environ 500.000, une polydispersion inférieure à environ 10, et une valeur ADT (Test de capacité de Dispersion de l'Asphaltène) égale au moins à environ 8. La polyoléfine greffée peut être définie comme pouvant contenir environ plus de 1,2 % en poids de monomère greffé sur une polyoléfine, ou pouvant contenir au moins environ 13 moles de monomères greffables par mole de polyoléfine, ou pouvant avoir une valeur selon le test de capacité de dispersion d'asphaltène (ADT) d'au moins environ 8. L'invention se rapporte également à une huile lubrifiante comprenant une huile de base lubrifiante et une polyoléfine greffée telle que décrite ci-dessus, ainsi qu'à un procédé de fabrication d'un agent améliorant l'indice de viscosité du dispersant. Le N-vinylimidazole ou autres monomères greffables, contenant de l'azote Bthyléniquement insaturé et/ou de l'oxygène et une polyoléfine greffable sont mis à réagir avec une quantité suffisante d'un initiateur pour greffer le monomère à la polyoléfine. L'initiateur et/ou le monomère greffable sont ajoutés aux autres ingrédients, maintenus à la température de réaction sur une certaine durée. La température de réaction est maintenue à un niveau suffisamment élevé pour donner des temps de réaction acceptables. Le N-vinylimidazole et l'initiateur peuvent être ajoutés à une vitesse uniforme, relativement lente, au cours de la réaction.
