There is provided a polarization insensitive Fabry-Perot wavelength tunable filter with a nematic liquid crystal, in which transparent electrodes (2) are respectively formed on the inner surfaces of two substrates (1), reflecting layers (3) are respectively coated on the transparent electrodes (2), one reflecting layer (3) having a homeotropic alignment layer (4) coated thereon to homeotropically align a liquid crystal, the other reflecting layer (3) having a homogeneous alignment layer (5) coated thereon and being processed to axially align the liquid crystal, and a nematic liquid crystal is inserted between the two substrates (1), to tune the wavelength of incident light depending on the magnitude of the voltage applied thereto. This Fabry-Perot filter has the transmission property completely insensitive to the polarization direction of the incident light in the whole operating voltage range.
La présente invention concerne un filtre Fabry-Perot accordable en fonction de la longueur d'onde, insensible à la polarisation, avec cristaux liquides nématiques, dans lequel des électrodes transparentes (2) sont formées sur les surfaces internes de deux substrats (1). Des couches réfléchissantes (3) sont appliquées sur ces électrodes transparentes (2). L'une de ces couches présente une couche d'alignement homéotropique (4) assurant l'alignement homéotropique des cristaux liquides, l'autre de ces couches est recouverte d'une couche d'alignement homogène (5) traitée de manière à assurer l'alignement axial des cristaux liquides. Intercalé entre les deux substrats (1), un cristal liquide nématique règle la longueur d'onde de la lumière incidente en fonction de l'importance de la tension appliquée à ces substrats. Ce filtre Fabry-Perot se caractérise en ce que sa faculté de transmission est totalement insensible au sens de polarisation de la lumière incidente sur toute la plage de tensions de fonctionnement.
