A single mode optical waveguide having reduced polarization mode dispersion and a method of making such a waveguide is disclosed. Perturbations (6, 8) are introduced into the waveguide core (4) to couple power between the two polarization modes. A model calculation shows that the perturbation length may be of the order of the correlation length. The inventive waveguide is robust in that polarization mode dispersion is reduced even if perturbations (6, 8) are impressed on the fiber after manufacture.

L'invention porte sur un guide d'ondes optiques monomode ayant une dispersion modale de polarisation réduite; l'invention porte également sur le procédé de fabrication de ce guide d'ondes. Des perturbations (6, 8) sont introduites dans le noyau du guide d'ondes (4) pour coupler la puissance entre les deux modes de polarisation. Un modèle de calcul montre que la longueur de perturbation peut être de l'ordre de la longueur de corrélation. Le guide d'ondes est suffisamment robuste pour que la dispersion modale de polarisation soit réduite même si les perturbations (6, 8) sont imprimées sur la fibre après fabrication.
