A polarization mode dispersion (PMD) emulator is disclosed which can easily replicate PMD effect in a fiber span. The PMD emulator of the present invention comprises: at least two sections of polarization maintaining (PM) fiber, each having a predetermined PMD value; mechanical rotating means which rotate one of neighboring ones among the PM fiber sections; a single mode fiber spliced in between neighboring PM fiber sections; wherein the single mode fiber has a small PMD value negligible compared to any of the PM fiber sections. According to the present invention, PMD effect can easily be replicated in the field of experiments studying PMD effect of a real fiber span.

La présente invention concerne un émulateur de dispersion de polarisation de mode qui peut aisément reproduire un effet de dispersion de polarisation dans un tronçon de fibre. L'émulateur de dispersion de polarisation de la présente invention comporte: au moins deux sections de fibre de maintien de polarisation, chacune ayant une valeur de dispersion de polarisation prédéterminée; des moyens de torsion mécanique qui effectuent la torsion d'une des fibres voisines parmi les sections de maintien de polarisation; une fibre monomode épissée entre des sections voisines de fibres de maintien de polarisation, la fibre monomode ayant une plus faible valeur de dispersion de polarisation peu importante par rapport à n'importe laquelle des sections de fibres de maintien de polarisation. Selon la présente invention, l'effet de dispersion de polarisation peut être aisément reproduit dans le cadre d'expériences pour l'étude de l'effet de la dispersion de polarisation d'un tronçon de fibre réel.
