ABSTRACT A three-phase alternating current pole-number changing rotating electric machine is disclosed. The machine is of the type in which the stator winding, lying in a predetermined number of slots, is adapted for switching to provide alternative pole numbers by pole-amplitude modulation and is configured to have similar half-phase windings for connection alter- natively in series and in parallel. It has been found that the presence of adjacent harmonics of m.m.f. waveform causes low frequency vibration of the machine frame, particularly in large motors of high pole-numbers. The invention overcomes this problem by the specific design of the stator winding. Specifically, the slot number is divisible into two factors, the first factor being one of the numbers "6", "12", "18" and "24" and the second factor being the number "S" of slots of each half of an initial winding element of the said stator winding, the phase coil-distribution of the said initial winding elements in "S" slots having for a winding element itself a low adjacent harmonic content and near balance between phases. The stator winding comprises a plurality of final winding elements wherein the number of final winding elements is derived from the number of initial winding elements by at least one stage of symmetrisation. The invention is particularly beneficial in machines using asymmetrical pole combinations.
