An optical waveguide (11) includes a region (22) which, after electrical poling of a guiding region (16), maintains an internal electric field induced by the poling potential. The internal electric field may arise from charge separation between regions (18, 20) induced by an adjacent poling electrode (12A), and region (22) acts to inhibit decay of the space charge and to increase the lifetime of the induced electro-optic effect. The waveguide may comprise a twin hole optical fiber (11) with internal electrodes (12A, 14A), where the region (22) comprises a borosilicate layer concentrically disposed about one of the electrodes.
L'invention concerne un guide d'ondes (11) optique comprenant une région (22) qui, après polarisation électrique d'une région de guidage (16) conserve un champ électrique interne induit par la tension de polarisation. Le champ électrique interne peut provenir de la séparation d'une charge entre des régions (18, 20) provoquée par une électrode (12A) de polarisation adjacente. La région (22) agit de manière à bloquer la chute de la charge d'espace et de manière à augmenter la durée de vie de l'effet électro-optique. Le guide d'ondes peut comprendre une fibre optique (11) à deux orifices contenant des électrodes (12A, 14A) internes, la région (22) comprenant une couche de borosilicate disposée de manière concentrique autour de l'une des électrodes.
