ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A system for charging coking oven batteries with car- bonaceous material arranged to prevent remnants of this material from depositing around the filling opening of these batteries and obviating dust, obnoxious gases and odors to spread through the surroundings of the battery. A filling tube is provided for supplying the carbonaceous material into the battery through its filling opening. This tube is encircled at its lower end by a sleeve shiftable to abut the top wall of the coking oven battery. A sealing ring is attached to this sleeve and has a diameter such that its bottom side rests on the top wall of the battery when the sleeve is lowered thereupon. The sleeve is equipped with nozzle means directing into the area circumscribed by the seal- ing ring a pressurized gaseous medium efficient to entrain remnants of the carbonaceous material depositing therein, drive them towards the battery filling opening and force them to fall thereinto, so that any dissipation of coal and its dust and a generation of ob- noxious gases and odors by coal smouldering are prevented. - 1 -
