The invention provides high molecular weight, crystalline or semi crystalline biodegradable and biocompatible poly(ester urea) (PEU) polymers useful for making vascular stents and hard tissue replacement implants, such as bone substitutes. The PE polymers are based on .alpha. amino acids and are made by a polycondensation reaction. PE polymer compositions can contain a therapeutic diol incorporated into the polymer backbone that is released from such an implant in situ. Bioactive agents, such as analgesics, antibiotics, and the like, can also be covalently attached to certain PEU polymers for release into tissue surrounding an implant during biodegradation of the polymer.

L'invention concerne des polymères de poly(ester-urée) (PEU) biocompatibles et biodégradables, cristallins ou semi-cristallins, de poids moléculaire élevé, destinés à la fabrication d'endoprothèses vasculaires et d'implants servant à remplacer des tissus durs, tels que des substituts osseux. Ces polymères sont composés d'acides alpha-aminés et produits à l'aide d'une réaction de polycondensation. L'invention concerne également des compositions à base de polymères de poly(ester-urée) pouvant comprendre un diol thérapeutique contenu dans le squelette du polymère, ce diol thérapeutique étant libéré par l'implant in situ. Des agents bioactifs, tels que des analgésiques, des antibiotiques et analogue, peuvent également être liés par covalence à certains polymères de poly(ester-urée), ces agents bioactifs étant libérés dans le tissu entourant l'implant lors de la biodégradation du polymère.
