Novel polyacrylic acid resins are prepared by polymerizing a monomer selected from the group consisting of H2C=CHCO2X, H2C=CR1CO2X, HR2C=CHCO2X, HR2C=CR1CO2X, HR2C=CHCOX, H2C=CHCOX, H2L=CR1COX, HR2C-CR1COX, H2C=CHCSOvX, HR2C=CHCSOvX, HR2C=CR1CSOvX, H2C=CR1CSOvX, H2C=CHCON(R3)2, HR2C=CHCON(R3)2, H2C=CR1CON(R3)2, or HR2C=CR1CON(R3)2, or a combination thereof, in the presence of at least 10% by weight of reaction components of an aromatic sulfonic acid or its salt, wherein R1,R2,R3,X and v are defined on pages 4 and 5 of the specification.
