ABSTRACT Certain polycarboxylate compounds, containing pendant dicarboxylic acid groups joined to a main chain by means of an ester linkage, are effective sequestrants of divalent and polyvalent metal ions and are useful as builders in detergent compositions. Preferred compounds are polyvinyl citrate and polyallyl citrate.
