Foamed polycrystalline silicon having bubbles therein and an apparent density of 2.20 g/cm3 or less. This silicon generates an extremely small amount of fine grains by crushing and can be easily crushed. There is also provided a method of producing foamed polycrystalline silicon. There is further provided a polycrystalline silicon production apparatus in which the deposition and melting of silicon are carried out on the inner surface of a cylindrical vessel, a chlorosilane feed pipe is inserted into the cylindrical vessel to a silicon molten liquid, and seal gas is supplied into a space between the cylindrical vessel and the chlorosilane feed pipe.
L'invention concerne un silicium polycristallin d'une densité apparente inférieure ou égale à 2,20 g/cm<3 >qui présente des bulles. Durant le broyage, la quantité de fines particules formées est extrêmement faible et le silicium peut être facilement pulvérisé. Pour produire ce silicium, on maintient le silicium à l'état fondu en présence d'hydrogène, on laisse tomber naturellement des gouttelettes dudit silicium renfermant de l'hydrogène obtenu pendant 0,2 à 3 secondes, et on refroidit les gouttelettes tombantes à un degré tel que les bulles d'hydrogène se trouvent confinées à l'intérieur de celles-ci. Ledit silicium est produit dans un appareil qui comprend un récipient cylindrique où le silicium est précipité et fondu et un tuyau d'alimentation en chlorosilane introduit dans le récipient cylindrique de manière à s'étendre jusqu'à la zone de fusion du silicium dudit récipient, et qui possède une structure permettant l'arrivée d'un gaz d'étanchéité dans l'espace compris entre le récipient cylindrique et le tuyau d'alimentation en chlorosilane.
