A polyelectrolyte which comprises a syndiotactic polystyrene and has an ion- exchanging ability; a polyelectrolyte film obtained by forming the polyelectrolyte into a film; and a fuel cell containing the polyelectrolyte film fitted thereto. The polyelectrolyte is suitable for use not only in fuel cells but in other applications including the manufacture of common salt from seawater and acid recovery from liquid wastes. It has long-term stability and is inexpensive.

L'invention concerne un polyélectrolyte renfermant un polystyrène syndiotactique, qui présente une capacité échangeuse d'ions. L'invention concerne également un film de polyélectrolyte résultant de la formation du polyélectrolyte en film, et une cellule électrochimique équipée du film considéré. Le polyélectrolyte se prête à une utilisation à la fois dans les cellules électrochimiques et dans les applications du type fabrication de sel courant à partir de l'eau de mer ou récupération d'acide à partir de déchets liquides. Ce poylélectrolyte offre une stabilité à long terme et est peu onéreux.
