ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Polyester compositions having enhanced stability are provided including high polymeric condensation thermoplastic polyester resin of a dicarboxylic acid and a glycol, the compositions containing a small but effective amount of defined organophosphorus derivatives as stabilizers. Processes for stabilizing polyesters are also provided by incorporating the small but effective amount of the organophosphorus derivatives during pro- cessing to prevent thermal and catalytic decomposition, and with improve- ments in resin colour, molecular weight retention and mechanical properties. An efficient process is also provided for inhibiting the decomposition activity of the first stage catalyst in the production of high polymeric condensation polyester resins.
