ABSTRACT The specification describes a composition which comprises degraded starch and a polyester of a polyhydric alcohol and a trimellitic acid compound. The polyester has an average molecular weight under about 4,000 and an acid number of at least 35. The polyester is present in a weight ratio of 0.1 to 100 parts by weight per each 100 parts by weight of the degraded starch solid. The specification also describes a method of improving the water-resistance of paper by sizing the paper at a size press with such a composition.
