Novel cross-linked polyesters of pyromellitic anhydride and a polyhydroxy compound containing more than two hydroxyl groups are highly water absorbent, and biodegradable, water swellable. The polyesters may be employed for the manufacture of medical devices such as prosthetic implants, supports for cell cultures or as wound dressings e.g. as a debriding agent.

L'invention concerne de nouveaux polyesters réticulés d'anhydride pyromellitique et d'un composé polyhydroxy contenant plus de deux groupes hydroxyles, à la capacité d'absorption d'eau élevée, qui sont biodégradables et susceptibles de gonflement en présence d'eau. Les polyesters peuvent être utilisés pour la fabrication d'appareils médicaux tels que des implants prothétiques, des substrats permettant les cultures de cellules ou en tant que pansements, par exemple, comme agent de débridement.
