ABSTRACT Polyester condensates of aromatic dicarboxylic acids and diphenols containing 1,2-bis(hydroxyphenyl)ethane in which the hydroxyl is in the 3 or 4 position. The component acids are selected from the group consisting of isophthalic acid, terephthalic acid, 3,3'- , 3,4'- and 4,4'- bibenzoic acids, 1,3-, 1,4- , 1,5- , 1,6-, 1,7- , 1,8- , 2,6- , and 2,7- naphthalenedicarboxylic acids and acids represented by the formula: Image wherein the carboxyl groups are in the 3- or 4- positions, and X is O, S, SO2, C-O, CH2, CH2CH2, CH(CH3) or C(CH3)2. The diphenol comprises 1,2-bis(hydroxyphenyl)ethane and optionally a diphenol selected from the group consisting of resor- cinol, hydroquinone, 3,3'-, 3,4'- and 4,4'-diphenols, 1,3-, 1,4-, 1,5-, 1,6-, 1,7-, 1,8-, 2,6- and 2,7-dihydroxynaphthalenes and diphenols represented by the formula: Image wherein the hydroxyl groups are in the 3- or 4- positions and Y is O, S, SO2, C-O, CH2, CH(CH3), C(CH3)2 or (CH2)3. The aromatic polyesters have superior fire safety perfor- mance and are used for film, fiber and molding applications. Rapidly crystallizable polyesters may be obtained with superior sol- vent resistance and stress cracking resistance. -2-
