The present invention provides polyhydroxy-substituted benz-, phenylacet- and mandelamidines, amidates, amidoximes and hydroxy- amidoximes-ribonucleotide reductase inhibitors, and free radical scavengers, of the general formula Image (I) wherein n is 2-5, m is 0 or 1, R' is NOH or NH, R is NH2 or NHOH when R' is NOH, R is NH2 or O-C1-3 alkyl when R'is NH, and R" is H or OH; and pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salts thereof. These compounds are useful in the treatment of disease conditions involving excess free radical formation in the body, or in the treatment of certain neoplasms.
