A polymer composition adapted to increase the durability of goods contained in a sealed package having a gas filled space in which the composition is contained in the space. An active component of the composition is a metal compound having the capacity to consume molecular oxygen present in the space. The metal compound is a metal ton having complexing properties and a polymer con- taining groups and/or atoms forming a complex with the metal ion. The composition is produced by treating the polymer with a metal compound dissolved or in slurry state in a volatile solvent under reflux conditions to form the active component of the composition.
