A method of forming a waveguide including a core region (12), a cladding region (14), and an index contrast region (16) situated therebetween includes depositing a polymerizable composite on a substrate (18) to form a layer (22), patterning the layer to define an exposed area (26) and an unexposed area (28) of the layer, irradiating the exposed area of the layer, and volatilizing the uncured monomer to form the waveguide, wherein the polymerizable composite includes a polymer binder and sufficient quantities of an uncured monomer to diffuse into the exposed area of the layer and form the index contrast region. The resulting waveguide includes an index contrast region which has a lower index of refraction than that of the core and cladding regions.

Procédé servant à créer un guide d'ondes comprenant un coeur (12), une gaine (14) et une zone de contraste d'indice (16), situés en position intermédiaire, ce qui consiste à effectuer le dépôt d'un composite polymérisable sur un substrat (18) afin de créer une couche (22), à configurer la couche afin de définir une zone d'exposition (26) et une zone non exposée (28) de cette couche, à irradier la zone exposée de cette couche et à volatiliser le monomère non durci afin de constituer le guide d'ondes. Le composite polymérisable contient un liant polymère et des quantités suffisantes d'un monomère non durci pour qu'elles se diffusent dans la zone exposée de la couche et crée la zone de contraste d'indice. Le guide d'ondes obtenu comprend une zone de contraste d'indice dont l'indice de réfraction est plus bas que celui du coeur et de la gaine.
