A powder for use in selective laser sintering, from which prototype articles and masters for molds may be formed, is disclosed. The powder is formed by spray drying a polymer emulsion to yield a distribution of particles of substantially spherical shape. The powder is then air classified to remove excessively small particles from the distribution; the powder may also be screened to remove large particles therefrom, as well. The resulting distribution of particles sizes, by volume, preferably has a mean particle size of between about 20µ and about 50µ, with preferably less than about 5 % (by volume) of its particles with a size of less than about 15µ and less than about 2 % (by volume) of its particles with a size of greater than about 75µ. The powder is subjected to selective laser sintering to produce an article of approximately 55 % to 75 % of theoretical density. The article may be used as a prototype article or part, or as a pattern or master for a mold.

L'invention concerne une poudre destinée à un frittage laser sélectif, pour former des prototypes d'articles et des moules primaires. La poudre est formée par atomisation d'une émulsion du polymère, ce qui permet d'obtenir des particules ayant une forme sensiblement sphérique. La poudre est ensuite soumise à une classification pneumatique pour enlever les particules trop petites, par rapport à la granulométrie visée; la poudre peut également être tamisée pour éliminer les particules trop grosses. Les particules ainsi obtenues ont une granulométrie, calculée en volume, correspondant à une taille moyenne entre 20 µ environ et 50 µ environ avec, de préférence, moins de 5 % environ des particules en volume ayant une taille inférieure à 15 µ environ et moins de 2 % environ des particules en volume ayant une taille supérieure à 75 µ environ. La poudre est soumise à un frittage laser sélectif pour produire un article, ayant approximativement 55 % à 75 % de la densité théorique. L'article peut être utilisé comme article ou pièce prototype ou comme motif ou modèle de moule.
