Disclosed is a process for producing a three dimensional object by means of selective inhibition of bonding (SIB). The process comprises: a) providing a layer of a pulverulent material, b) applying, selectively, a bonding inhibitor to such selected regions of the layer provided in step a) that are other than the cross section of the three-dimensional object, c) repeating steps a) and b) until all cross-sectional areas of which the three-dimensional object is composed form a matrix, and outer boundaries of the object are formed by an interface between the pulverulent material with the applied bonding inhibitor and the untreated pulverulent material, and d) on at least one occasion, treating the layers so that bonding takes place between the pulverulent materials not provided with the bonding inhibitor, wherein the pulverulent material has a median particle size of from 10 to 200 um and comprises at least one polymer selected from polyester, polyvinyl chloride, polyacetal, polypropylene, polyethylene, polystyrene, polycarbonate, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), PMMI, ionomer, polyamide, copolyester, copolyamide, terpolymer, acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer (ABS), and a mixture of at least two of these. A variety of materials, such as a metallic ink, a silver pigment, a reflective powder, an oil, an alcohol, a wax, water and water/surfactant mixture, may be used as the bonding inhibitor. The process can be carried out at a relatively low temperature and shrinkage caused during the processing is low.
