A method of forming a molding mat (295) formed bundles of reinforcing fibers and bonding materials is provided. The reinforcing fibers (200) are preferably- wet use chopped strand glass fibers (WUCS) . The bonding materials (210) may be any thermosetting material having a melting point less than the reinforcing fiber. The molding mat may be formed by partially opening the wet use chopped strand glass fibers and f ilamentizing the bonding materials, blending the reinforcement and bonding fibers, forming (270) the reinforcement and bonding fibers into a sheet, and bonding (290) the sheet. During bonding, the sheet is heated to a temperature above the melting point of the bonding fibers but below the temperature of the glass fibers . The molding mat thus formed may be used as a reinforcement material in sheet molding compounds.
L'invention concerne un procédé destiné à la formation d'un mat (295) à base de faisceaux de fibres de renfort et de matières de liage. Les fibres de renfort utilisées sont de préférence des fibres de verre coupées (WUCS). Les matières de liage utilisées peuvent être des matières thermodurcissables possédant un point de fusion inférieur à celui des fibres de renfort. Le procédé de l'invention consiste à ouvrir partiellement les fibres de verre coupées humides, à former des filaments à l'aide des matières de liage, à mélanger les fibres de renfort et les fibres de liage, à former une feuille à partir du mélange obtenu et à fixer la feuille. Durant l'étape de fixation, la feuille est chauffée à une température supérieure au point de fusion des fibres de liage, mais inférieure à celui des fibres de verre. Le mat ainsi formé peut être utilisé comme matériau de renfort dans des préimprégnés.
