ABSTRACT The invention relates to polymeric alloys of rod- like and coil-like aromatic heterocyclic polymers useful for the fabrication of high strength load bearing struc- tural components. In one aspect of the invention, rod- like aromatic heterocyclic polymers are used as reinforce- ment in coil-like heterocyclic polymer matrices to pro- vide composites at the molecular level that are analogous to chopped fiber composites. A representative example of the coil-like heterocyclic polymer consists essentially of repeating units having the following structural formulas: Image _ or Image - 18 - wherein X is NR, N? , O or S, where ? is phenly, Ar' in Image Image Image Image Image or Image , and m is an integer having a value such that the polymer has an intrinsic viscosity of about 2 to 20 dl/g as determined in methanesulfonic acid at 30°C, and a representative example of the rod-like aromatic heterocyclic polymer consists essentially of repeating units having the following structural formulas: Image or Image wherein X is NR, N? , 0 or S, where ? is phenyl, Ar is Image Image and n is an integer having a value such that the polymer has an intrinsic viscosity of about 5 to 30 dl/g as determined in methane- sulfonic acid at 30°C.
