ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Poly (?-alkylacrylic ester-aminoalkylene amide) useful as a sludge dispersant additive in lubricants and liquid hydrocarbon fuels comprises the amide reaction product of polyamine with an acidic intermediate inter- polymer comprising C1 to C8 alpha-alkyl acrylic acid copolymerized with C8 to C20 alkyl ester of a C1 to C8 alpha-alkyl acrylic acid which copolymer can be prepared by free radical catalysis. The poly (?-alkylacrylic ester- aminoalkylene amide) formed by the above reaction will generally have a nitrogen content in the range of 0.2 to 10 weight percent N. Additional functionality such as pour point depressing ability can be incorporated in the dispersant by use of straight chain alkyl groups in the ester component, and/or a V.I. effect can be achieved by use of high molecular weights for the copolymer.
