Abstract Disclosed is a polymeric thermo-optic device comprising a polymeric optical waveguide having a layered structure comprising a polymeric guiding layer (core layer) sandwiched between two cladding layers having a refractive index lower than that of the guiding layer. A heating element is placed against one of the cladding layers. According to the invention, this cladding layer has a lower refractive index than the other cladding layer.
