Abstract of the Disclosure Radically polymerisable compounds such as acrylic and methacrylic compounds are polymerised by irrad- iation with light having a wavelength from 200 to 500 nm in the presence of symmetrical azo compounds containing tertiary aliphatic hydrocarbon radicals bonded to the nitrogen azo atoms, the radicals each having a molecular weight of 71 to 97 and the poly- merisation temperature being kept below 100°C by control of the intensity of the light. The preferred azo-alkanes have the formula Image wherein either R1 represents a methyl group and R2 represents an ethyl or propyl group or R1 and R2 together represent a tetramethylene or pentamethylene group.
