ABSTRACT POLYMERISATION PROCESS A monomer charge having a defined slight solubility in water, but giving rise to a polymer which is water- insoluble, is emulsified in water in the presence of a non- ionic surface-active compound which comprises in the molecule (a) a component of molecular weight at least 400 which is per se soluble in the aqueous phase, (b) another component of molecular weight 150-1000 which is per se soluble in the monomer phase and (c) an unsaturated grouping capable of copolymerising with the monomer(s) and being attached to or integral with the monomer-soluble component, and the emulsified monomer is then polymerised in the presence of a non-ionisable free radical azo initiator which is soluble in water and sub- stantially insoluble in the monomer(s). The product is a wholly sterically stabilised aqueous polymer dispersion useful for the formulation of water-borne coating compositions.
