R3091 ABSTRACT A process is described for the polymerisation of unsaturated fatty acids, especially containing oleic acid, whereby the acid is heated to 175°C in the presence of a catalyst for a period sufficient for less than 40% of the acid to be polymerised. The product dimer acid is easier to hydrogenate than if polymerisation is continued further. The remaining unpolymerised material undergoes cis-trans isomerisation.
