Hydrophilic UV light absorbing polymerizing monomers are provided. These monomers are copolymerizable for providing biocompatible hydrogels capable of absorbing at least 90 % of the UV light incident to the hydrogels. Such hydrogels are optically transparent, have high refractive indices, and possess long term stability. The hydrogels provided are useful in all applications where hydrogels may be used including intraocular lenses, corneal inlays, corneal onlays, contact lenses and similar applications.

L'invention concerne des monomères hydrophiles de polymérisation absorbant les rayons UV. Ils peuvent être copolymérisés dans le but de produire des hydrogels biocompatibles capables d'absorber au moins 90 % des rayons UV incidents sur les hydrogels. De tels hydrogels sont optiquement transparents, présentent des indices de réfraction et font preuve de stabilité à long terme. Les hydrogels se prêtent à toutes les d'applications faisant intervenir des hydrogels, notamment les lentilles intraoculaires, les inlays cornéens, les onlays cornéens et les lentilles de contact.
