A process and a catalyst for the production of elastomeric, primarily stereoregular poly-.alpha.-olefin characterized by a relatively narrow distribution of relatively short block lengths, which comprise the polymerization of .alpha.-olefin of at least 3 carbon atoms in the presence of a catalyst which comprises the reaction product of a magnesium oxy compound and a tetravalent titanium halide in the presence of an electron donor, an organoaluminum compound and a selectivity control agent which is an aromatic heterocyclic nitrogen compound.

Procédé et catalyseur utiles pour produire des poly-alpha-oléfines élastomères surtout stéréorégulières qui se caractérisent par une distribution relativement étroite de blocs relativement courts. L'alpha-oléfine ayant au moins trois atomes de carbone est polymérisée en présence d'un catalyseur qui comprend le produit de la réaction d'un composé oxyde de magnésium avec un halogénure tétravalent de titane en présence d'un donneur d'électrons, un composé organoaluminium et un composé hétérocyclique aromatique d'azote qui sert de régulateur de la sélectivité.
