S P E C I F I C A T I O N TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: BE IT KNOWN that we, SHINGO FUTAMURA and THOMAS C. BOUTON, citizens of JAPAN and the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA respectively, residing in SEVILLE and AKRON respectively, in the Counties of MEDINA and SUMMIT respectively and State of OHIO, have invented certain new and useful improvements in POLYMERIZATION PROCESS AND POLYMER PRODUCED THEREBY ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The process disclosed herein involves the prepar- ation of butadiene-styrene copolymers of improved green strength and low running temperature when used in tire compositions, which comprises the steps of polymerizing a mixture of buta- diene and styrene in a hydrocarbon solvent having a lithium alkyl initiator therein while the monomer mixture is fed into the polymerization system at a rate slow enough to effect ran- dom copolymerization in the resulting polymer backbone, ef- fecting a high degree of branching by conducting the polymer- ization at a temperature of 90-175° C. (190-347° F.) and ef- fecting the final 10-50% of the polymerization with a monomer portion containing a higher proportion of styrene than is in- corporated into the polymer-backbone, thereby effecting the formation of block polystyrene at the terminals of a plurality of branches. This copolymer of improved green strength and - 1 - low running temperature is very useful in tire compositions
