A polymerization process for preparing a silica-filled butyl rubber polymer. A quaternary onium ion substituted silaceous nanoclay is dispersed in the organic polymerization fluid prior to polymerization of an isoolefin monomer and a multiolefin monomer in the fluid. The resulting silica-filled polymer comprises butyl rubber intercalated with silica from the silaceous nanoclay. The rate of polymerization is substantially unaffected by addition of the nanoclay to the polymerization fluid. The resulting silica-filled polymers exhibit improved impermeability as compared with non-filled polymers.

L'invention concerne un procédé de polymérisation destiné à la préparation d'un polymère de caoutchouc butylique rempli de silice. Une nanoargile siliceuse à ion onium quaternaire substitué est dispersée dans le fluide de polymérisation organique avant la polymérisation d'un monomère d'isooléfine et d'un monomère de multioléfine dans le fluide. Le polymère rempli de silice résultant comprend du caoutchouc butylique intercalé avec de la silice issue de la nanoargile siliceuse. La vitesse de polymérisation n'est sensiblement pas affectée par l'ajout de la nanoargile au fluide de polymérisation. Les polymères remplis de silice résultants présentent une imperméabilité améliorée en comparaison des polymères non remplis.
