The invention is directed towards the formation of polymers and copolymers using late transition metal polymerization catalyst complexes which are formed in situ. In the first process step of the instant invention, a composition having the formula MXZn is simultaneously contacted with a ligand and an activating cocatalyst. Referring to the formula, M is selected from the group consisting of Cu, Ag, and Au; X is selected from the group consisting of halides, hydride, triflate, acetates, borates, C1 through C12 alkyl, C1 through C12 alkoxy, C3 through C12 cycloalkyl, C3 through C12 cycloalkoxy, aryl, thiolates, carbon monoxide, cyanate, olefins, and any other moiety into which a monomer can insert; Z is selected from the group consisting of halides, hydride, triflate, acetates, borates, C1 through C12 alkyl, C1 through C12 alkoxy, C3 through C12 cycloalkyl, C3 through C12 cycloalkoxy, aryl, tholates, carbon monoxide, cynate, olefins, a neutral coordinating ligand, and other moiety into which a monomer can insert; n equals 0, 1 or 2. In the second process step of the instant invention, olefinic monomers are contacted with the activated catalyst composition under polymerization conditions.

Cette invention se rapporte à la formation de polymères et de copolymères, par l'emploi de complexes catalysants de polymérisation de métaux de transition tardifs formés in situ. Dans la première étape du processus de l'invention, une composition de la formule MXZ¿n? est simultanément placée au contact d'un ligand et d'un cocatalyseur activant. Dans ladite formule, M est sélectionné dans le groupe constitué par Cu, Ag et Au; X est sélectionné dans le groupe constitué par halogénures, hydrure, triflate, acétates, borates, alkyle C¿1?-C¿12?, alcoxy C¿1?- C¿12?, cycloalkyle ¿3?-C¿12 ?, cycloalcoxy C¿3 ?-C¿12?, aryle, thiolates, oxyde de carbone, cyanate, oléfines, et tout autre fragment dans lequel un monomère peut s'insérer; Z est sélectionné dans le groupe constitué par halogénures, hydrure, triflate, acétates, borates, alkyle C¿1?-C¿12?, alcoxy C¿1?- C¿12?, cycloalkyle ¿3?-C¿12 ?, cycloalcoxy C¿3 ?-C¿12?, aryle, thiolates, oxyde de carbone, cyanate, oléfines, un ligand de coordination neutre et tout autre fragment dans lequel un monomère peut s'insérer; n est 0, 1 ou 2. Dans la seconde étape du processus de l'invention, des monomères oléfiniques sont placés au contact de la composition catalysante activée dans des conditions de polymérisation.
