ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION Preparation of polymers of norbornene-type monomers is accomplished by conducting ring-opening polymerization in presence of a catalyst selected from molybdenum and tungsten compounds, a cocatalyst selected from organometals and organometal hydrides, and a halogen source. In a preferred embodiment, the catalyst is halogen-free and is selected from organoammonium molybdates and tungstates, the cocatalyst is selected from trialkylmetal hydrides and tetraalkylmetals containing 1 to 6 carbons in each alkyl group, and the halogen source is selected from alkylhalogensilanes and halogensilanes devoid of alkyl groups.
