The present invention relates to polymerized hydrogels and processes to make such hydrogels, in particular hydrogel adhesives which are capable of attaching to mammalian skin and can be used in various personal care products, such as waste-management articles, and a variety of functional articles to be worn by a human. The hydrogels described herein are characterized by very low amount of residual starting monomers, impurities, and/or by-products that could be formed during polymerization. Specifically, the hydrogels are made by adding scavengers and/or chain transfer agent prior to polymerization.It has been found, that upon addition of same scavengers the material properties of the polymerized hydrogel differ from the properties of gels polymerized without the scavenger. This is due to the fact, that these specific scavengers act also as chain transfer agents in the radical polymerization.Further studies showed that also chain transfer agents, that are no scanvengers for residual monomer(s), impurities or byproducts influence the material properties of the polymerized hydrogel adhesive.
L'invention concerne des hydrogels polymérisés et des procédés de fabrication de tels hydrogels, notamment des adhésifs d'hydrogel capable de se fixer à la peau humaine et pouvant être utilisés dans divers produits de soin, tels que des articles de gestion des déchets, et une variété d'articles fonctionnels portés par des êtres humains. Les hydrogels décrits dans cette invention sont caractérisés en ce qu'ils contiennent une faible quantité de monomères d'impuretés et/ou de sous-produits de base résiduels pouvant être formés au cours de la polymérisation. Plus particulièrement, les hydrogels sont fabriqués par ajout d'épurateurs et/ou d'un agent de transfert de chaîne avant la polymérisation. On a découvert, que lorsque des épurateurs sont ajoutés, les propriétés du matériau d'hydrogel polymérisé diffèrent des propriétés de gels polymérisés sans épurateur. Ceci est dû à ce que ces épurateurs spécifiques agissent également en tant qu'agents de transfert de chaîne dans la polymérisation radicale. D'autres études ont démontré que les agents de transfert de chaîne, qui ne sont pas des épurateurs pour un/des monomère(s), des impuretés ou des sous-produits résiduels ont une influence sur les propriétés du matériau de l'adhésif d'hydrogel polymérisé.
