61109-752 ABSTRACT Novel N-chloroamide polymers and a process for the production thereof are disclosed wherein said polymers have the formula Image wherein R is hydrogen or methyl, X is a halogen atom and the ratio of x to y ranges from about 98:2.0 to about 85:15, respectively, the molecular weight of the polymer being at least about 100,000. A third comonomer Z, may also be present, which is a cationic monomer, in an amount z such that the ratio of (x + y) to z ranges from about 99.9 to 0.1 to about 50:50, respectively, These polymers are produced by contacting a water-in-oil emulsion of an acrylamide polymer having a molecular weight of at least about 100,000 with a halogen gas at -10°C to 80°C, a pH of 7° or less for from 4 minutes to 4 hours and a mole ratio of gas to polymer of 0.1:99.9 to 50:100, respectively.
