ABSTRACT Industrial process cooling water systems are stabilized against iron precipitation by adding thereto an effective amount of an acrylic acid- acrylamide copolymer having from 10 - 50 weight % acrylic acid, and from 50 - 90 weight % acrylamide, and a molecular weight in the range of 2,000 to 170,000. The copolymer may also be used in the form of its water soluble alkali metal or ammonium salts. These copolymers offer advantages over known related materials, for example hydrolyzed polyacrylonitriles.
