Polynucleotide, DNA constructs and methods are disclosed for the modification of cellulose content in plant tissues. Plants are transformed with constructs encoding either an active Anabaena sp. sucrose synthase gene or a soybean nodule sucrose synthase gene, which leads to increased cellulose content when over-expressed under the control of a cambium/xylem preferred promoter. Plant transformants harboring an Anabaena sp. or a soybean nodule sucrose synthase gene demonstrated increased content of cellulose, a trait that is thought to improve woody trees for cellulose extraction during pulping and papermaking.

Polynucléotides, structures d'ADN et procédés pour la modification de la teneur en cellulose de plantes. On transforme les plantes via des structures codant soit un gène actif de sucrose synthase d'Anabasena sp. soit un gène actif de sucrose synthase de nodule de soja, ce qui se traduit par une augmentation de la teneur en cellulose en cas de surexpression sous le contrôle d'un promoteur qui, de préférence, est un promoteur cambium/xylem. Les transformants végétaux présentant l'un ou l'autre de ces gènes se caractérisent par une teneur accrue en cellulose, que l'on considère comme un facteur améliorant les plantes ligneuses pour les besoins de l'extraction de cellulose durant la fabrication de la pâte à papier et du papier.
