A polypeptide binding to syntaxin 1a and comprising the amino acid sequence represented by SEQ ID NO:1 in Sequence Listing or a polypeptide binding to syntaxin 1a and having a homology of at least about 90% with the above amino acid sequence; peptide fragments of these polypeptides; and polynucleotides encoding the same or complementary strands thereof. Inhibitors, antagonists and potentiators for the physiological effects of these polypeptides; and medicinal compositions using the same. Using genetic engineering techniques, a process for producing the above polypeptides or peptides; a method of identifying the above inhibitors, antagonists and potentiators; and a method and a kit for diagnosing a disease in which the polypeptides participate.
