Abstract of the Disclosure Cosmetic preparations for application to keratinous tissues, such as hair, nails or skin are provided wherein such cosmetic preparations consist of an aqueous solution, having a pH from about 2.5 to about 9, said aqueous solution containing not less than about 0.1% by weight polypeptide, including a cosmetically effective amount of polypeptides pre- dominately having two sterically unhindered positive charges, which polypeptides have the formula: Image In this formula n is an integer sufficient to provide a molecular weight of the polypeptide of from about 700 to about 1600; each R1 is independently a side group attached to the alpha carbon of a naturally occurring amino acid; and R2 is selected from the group consisting of : Image The polypeptides are prepared by the hydrolysis of proteins containing amino acids selected from the group consisting of arginine, lysine, and mixtures thereof, the polypeptides pre- dominately resulting from the trypsin catalyzed hydrolysis of the proteins.
