Abstract of the Disclosure A polysaccharide-containing adsorbent for the removal of heavy metal ions from an effluent which adsor- bent has been manufactured from (1) a polysaccharide-containing material, (2) a basic, nitrogen-containing polymer which can be acylated, (3) a crosslinking compound, which is different from component (4), containing at least two reactive substituents and (4) an aliphatic or araliphatic carboxylic acid con- taining a mobile substituent or a multiple bond which is capable of undergoing addition.
