Flexible polyurethane foams are prepared by reacting a polyisocyanate with a high equivalent weight polyol. At least a portion of the high equivalent weight polyol is a polyester containing hydroxymethyl groups. The polyester is prepared in a multi-step process from animal or vegetable fats, by recovering the constitutent fatty acids, hydroformylating carbon-carbon double bonds in the fatty acids and reducing to form hydroxymethyl groups, and then forming a polyester by reaction with an initiator compound.

L'invention concerne la préparation de mousses polyuréthanne souples consistant à faire réagir un polyisocyanate avec un polyol à poids équivalent élevé. Au moins une partie dudit polyol est un polyester renfermant des groupes hydroxyméthyle. Le polyester est préparé dans un procédé à étapes multiples, à partir de graisses animales ou végétales, consistant à récupérer les acides gras des constituants, à effectuer une hydroformylation des liaisons doubles carbone-carbone dans les acides gras et à effectuer une réduction de manière à former des groupes hydroxyméthyle, puis à former un polyester au moyen d'une réaction avec un composé amorceur.
