2142885 9406840 PCTABS00030 The invention relates to a polyurethane having: a) water-soluble oxyethylene-group-containing end groups having a molecular weight of 400-15,000, preferably 1,000-8,000, and b) groups pendant from the polymer backbone and containing hydrocarbon groups having 8-22 carbon atoms, preferably 10-14 carbon atoms, in a number of at least 0.1 per urethane bond, preferably at least 0.4 per urethane bond. The polyurethane has moderate viscosities in aqueous solution and is especially useful as a thickener, for instance in alkyd- or latex-base water paints.
