A method of preparing a plasticised particulate polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composition is provided, comprising: mixing, in a mixer, at a mixer speed and for a time sufficient that the mixture attains a temperature of at least 50~C: particulate PVA resin in an amount from 80% to 90% by weight of the mixture; and plasticiser in an amount from 10% to 20% by weight of the mixture, wherein at least a portion of the plasticiser is water; monitoring the apparent viscosity of the mixture during mixing and continuing mixing until the apparent viscosity of the mixture has peaked to a maximum and dropped off to a substantially constant level, thereby to obtain a plasticised particulate mixture having a moisture content in the range from 7% to 14%; preferably adding an anti-caking agent in an amount from 0.05% to 0.5% by weight of the plasticised particulate mixture, and continuing mixing until the anti-caking agent is blended to the plasticised particulate mixture; and stopping mixing, and removing the mixture from the mixer, wherein the mixture temperature is kept below 100~C at all times during mixing. The properties of the plasticised particulate composition are such that it can be processed, by extrusion and blowing, to a film having advantageous characteristics in terms of structure and properties. Accordingly, also provided is a PVA film characterised in that, when viewed using polarising light microscopy, it has a nonuniform texture consisting of distinct short range areas, e.g. 10 to 500 micrometers, each short range area showing anisotropic orientation within its area, each short range area being oriented isotropically.
La présente invention a trait à un procédé de préparation d'un composition particulaire plastifiée à base de poly(alcool) de vinyle, comprenant : le mélange, dans un mélangeur, à une vitesse de mélangeur et pour une durée suffisante à permettre au mélange d'atteindre une température égale ou supérieure à 50 ·C ; la réduction en particules de résine d'alcool polyvinylique en une quantité de 80 % à 90 % en poids du mélange, et d'agent plastifiant en une quantité de 10 % à 20 % en poids du mélange, au moins une portion de plastifiant étant de l'eau ; le contrôle de la viscosité apparente du mélange pendant le mélange et la poursuite du mélange jusqu'à ce que la viscosité apparente du mélange atteigne une valeur maximale et soit réduite à un niveau sensiblement constant, permettant ainsi l'obtention d'un mélange particulaire plastifié présentant un taux d'humidité compris entre 7 % et 14 % ; l'ajout, de préférence, d'un agent antiagglomérant en une quantité entre 0,05 % et 0,5 % en poids du mélange particulaire plastifié, et la poursuite du mélange jusqu'au mélange complet de l'agent antiagglomérant dans le mélange particulaire plastifié ; l'arrêt du mélange, et le retrait du mélange du mélangeur, dans lequel la température du mélange est maintenue inférieure à 100 ·C pendant toute la durée du mélange. Les propriétés de la composition particulaire plastifiée sont telles qu'elle peut être transformée, par extrusion et soufflage, en un film présentant des caractéristiques avantageuses en termes de structure et de propriétés. Par conséquent, l'invention à également trait à un film à base de poly(alcool) de vinyle caractérisé en ce que, observé en microscopie de lumière polarisante, il présente une texture non uniforme constituée de régions distinctes de faible portée, par exemple de 10 à 500 micromètres, chaque région de faible portée présentant une orientation anisotrope au sein de sa zone, chaque zone de faible portée étant d'orientation isotrope.
