Polyvinyl Alcohol Derivatives And Crosslinked Hydrogel Contact Lenses Made Therefrom Abstract Polymers which are derivatives of a polyvinyl alcohol, having a weight average molecular weight of at least about 2,000, and containing from about 0.5 to about 90 percent, based on the number of hydroxyl groups in said polyvinyl alcohol, of units of the formula Image (I) wherein R1 and R2 are independently alkylene, arylene, a divalent cycloaliphatic group, arylenealkylene, alkylenearylene or arylene- alkylenearylene, n in 0 or 1, A' is oxygen or NR', A is oxygen, NR" or a bivalent ureido group, R3 is hydrogen or methyl, R4 is hydrogen, methyl or COOR5, where R5 is hydrogen or lower alkyl, with the proviso that if R3 is methyl, R4 is hydrogen, R' and R" are independently hydrogen or lower alkyl, these polymers being an addition reaction product of units of formula I with from 0 to about 80 units of a vinylic monomer per unit of formula I, and crosslinked hydrogel contact lenses made therefrom and their preparation.
