Abstract A pontoon, normally used as a mirrored pair, and primarily for use to walk or ski on water, with applications on snow, sand and the like. The pontoon comprises a hollow, elongated body with a V bottom and substantially vertical sides and has a skin of suitable non-porous material. Consideration has been given in the total size to compensate for the maximum vertical dynamic loading in normal use. A number of bow profiles are disclosed, which would be suitable in different water conditions. In addition to a vertical rearward end, rearward ends which cause the forward end to pitch nose down during the kick stage to enhance the thrust provided by the user's legs are disclosed. The center of buoyancy of the pontoon is dependent on the instantaneous load, but is generally ahead of the center of gravity of pontoon. An opening on the top of the pontoon permits the user to position his weight on the inside bottom of the pontoon at the center of buoyancy while allowing for forward bending of the leg. The opening has a lip which will accept a skirt around the user's leg, similar to a kayak skirt around the kayak user's waist. With the user's foot in a boot, the boot is secured in a binding. Retarding devices secured on the V bottom cause drag on the pontoon during the kick stage. The disconcerting feeling of rearward "slip" before the retarding devices "grab" has been minimized or eliminated in two designs disclosed. Keels maintain the pontoons on a straight course, although the V bottom inherently does this as well. With the user's foot positioned ahead of the center of gravity, any change in course can be easily accomplished at the beginning of the glide stage when there is the least weight on the pontoon. Many additional features of the pontoon are disclosed, which make the pontoon an extremely usable and highly manufacturable product. Finally, optional devices which could be used with the potoon are disclosed, although most of these devices are now the subject of divisional patent applications.
