ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An animal litter is characterised in that it consists of or contains a porous calcium silicate granulate or powder having pore radii of less than 500 µ, preferably less than 100 µ, more particularly less than 60 µ, specifically 10 to 20 µ. The calcium silicate granulate or powder is prepared by reacting crystalline and, if required, amorphous silicon dioxide, or materials contain- ing the same, with calcium oxide or materials containing the same, in a CaO to SiO2 molar ratio of 0.8:1-1.1:1, an anion-active surfactant preferably being used with an active substance content of from 30 to 60%, e.g. 50% to produce a microporous stable foam into which the materials are mixed. The mixture is then maintained at an elevated temperature to complete the reaction, the resulting solid product is comminuted, dried and graded.
